Message of the IBED Principal
Basic Education Department
The Basic Education Department of UST Angelicum College has always been a place for learning for many students who want to experience quality education in a non-conventional way, and through mastery learning.
The Basic Education Department was established in 1972 to serve as an alternative option for parents who do not wish to subject their children to the rigors and inflexibilities of the graded school. With its learner-centered, self-paced, and non-graded system, the school is more focused on catering to the individual needs of the learners with its philosophy, “to do what is best for the learners”.
Vision
The Integrated Basic Education Department of UST Angelicum College envisions itself as a leading provider of an alternative and transformative basic education that promotes the holistic Christian formation through the integration of academics, spiritual development, and social involvement for the service of the community, the nation, the environment, and the Church.
Mission
The Integrated Basic Education Department is committed to:
- provide a balanced curriculum that promotes the intellectual, spiritual, moral, social, and physical development of the learners;
- equip the learners with the essential competencies that promote lifelong learning through mastery learning;
- develop the interests of the students, and cultivate their potential to prepare them for senior high school; and
- accompany the learners in becoming Stewards of God’s creation, Engaged global citizens, Active lifelong learners, and Lovers of Truth.
Types of Learners
The school acknowledges that every learner is unique. As such, the school continuously enhances its curriculum to adapt to new types and emerging ways of learning. The following types of learners exist in UST Angelicum College’s Integrated Basic Education Department:
Dependent Learners
Learners in their formative years (Kinder to YS4) who rely greatly on the learning facilitator for guidance in all activities and needs. They are carefully supported to build foundational skills and confidence.
Semi-Independent Learners
Learners in YS5–YS7 (Grades 4–6) are in a period of transition from dependent to independent learners. While they still need supervision, they are also capable of working independently when guided.
They perform well in traditional classroom teaching but may also be given self-directed programs such as library research, self-study materials, and experiments—nurturing confidence, responsibility, and the independence required in higher levels.
Independent Learners
Learners in the Higher Level (YS8–YS11) who require minimal supervision. They thrive in self-study, library research, experiments, and independent projects, demonstrating mastery and responsibility in their learning journey.
Programs
Regular Program
Learners come to UST Angelicum College every day from Monday to Friday and follow a regular class schedule with different subject facilitators. Modular instruction, coupled with socialized recitations or individual/group instructions, is made available, with all activities coordinated with relevant school personnel. Opportunities are scheduled for learners to update their skills when they lag.
The classroom is arranged so that those capable of working independently are free to move and get the materials they need, while an area is made available for those who need further explanations from the learning facilitators.
Home Study Program
The UST Angelicum College Home Study Program (HSP) is an accredited program by the Department of Education (DepEd) since 1996, and follows the curriculum of the government with its corresponding enhancements and modifications. It is an alternative program that caters to the academic needs of learners who cannot be physically present in school on a regular basis due to health conditions, employment, or place of residence.
